President Faure’s withdrawal of the referendum request |05 June 2019
United 91㽶Ƶ reacts
The United 91㽶Ƶ party has reacted to President Danny Faure’s decision to withdraw his request to the Electoral Commission to organise a referendum on whether or not Seychellois living abroad should have the right to vote in national elections.
In a communiqué released yesterday, the United 91㽶Ƶ party writes:
“United 91㽶Ƶ has taken note of the Attorney General’s explanation for the President’s withdrawal of the request to the Election Commission to organise a referendum on whether or not Seychellois living abroad should have the right to vote in national elections.
“United 91㽶Ƶ welcomes the President’s decision which is in the national interest because legal technicalities and politics should not overshadow and confuse the central issue which is the right to vote.
“The party is of the firm belief that such an important matter, which could have immense consequences on people’s lives and the future of the nation should not be decided by the National Assembly or any other institution but by the Seychellois people living in 91㽶Ƶ themselves.
“United 91㽶Ƶ believes in the absolute right and capacity of the Seychellois people to determine its own destiny.”
