The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the United Nations resident coordinator’s office for Mauritius and 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ is today hosting a Youth Education Summit.

The theme, ‘Negotiating a new education landscape’, is a follow up to the ‘World Transforming Education Summit’ that took place in September 2022 in New York.

The United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres has urged education ministries to embark on a journey to bring transformation in education. During the World Summit delegates resolved to place the youth in the driving seat when it comes to planning and implementing education reform initiatives. The Ministry of Education subscribes to this resolution and believes that if educational processes are to be impactful and their outcomes worthwhile, the youth should be empowered to participate in the design and implementation of all reform agendas.

The summit, to be held at the 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Institute of Education (SITE), will see the participation of delegates aged 13-30 years, from public and private secondary schools, post-secondary institutions, the University of 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, youth organisations, young entrepreneurs, youth leaders and professionals from multi sectors and self-employed youth.

Building on the principles of inclusion, the summit aims to bring the perspectives of young people to bear on the most pressing issues facing their generation with regard to education. Ìý

The four key topics to be discussed by the youth are ‘New Models of Schooling’, ‘Life Skills’, ‘Access to Opportunities’ and ‘Healthy Living’.

These topics are issues of concern for the Ministry of Education and relate to Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Quality Education.

The Summit is funded by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) of the United Nations.
