Holiday fun continues!

School holidays are a time for fun and excitement for children and the Pointe Larue holiday programme has not disappointed parents and children alike.

Over 80 children have signed up for the Pointe Larue school holiday programme during the holidays hosted by the department of local government and the national library.

Hosted at the Pointe Larue community centre from 8am to 3pm, the programme started on August 12 and has been going full throttle since.

So far, the children have visited the State House, 91㽶Ƶ Fire and Rescue Services Agency (SFRSA) and will soon be undertaking another educational visit at Zil Air.

Aside from visits, the children are engaged in a wide array of activities involving art, poetry, story writing and telling as well as reading.

When 91㽶Ƶ NATION passed by the community centre yesterday, the children aged 4 to 16 years, had been separated in five groups and were enthusiastically drawing, painting, designing nail art and sewing.

“Although we have about 80 children signed up for the programme, they come on and off on a daily basis; today for instance 77 children have turned up. We had initially aimed to take on 60 kids on the programme but we have clearly surpassed this limit,” programme coordinator, Diana Zelia, stated.

Throughout her time as a holiday programme coordinator, Mrs Zelia has observed that the number of children signing up keeps increasing each and every holiday.

“Nonetheless, we receive the full support of the district administrator (Beguitta Melanie). The National Library also provides us with two of their employees and we further have the assistance of a few animators from the NRA (Neighbourhood Recreational Activities).”

“While the programme is free of charge, we encourage each child to bring their own snacks and lunch but, in cases where we note that some of the children cannot bring their own, we make provisions for them,” she added.

“This type of programmes ensures that children remain occupied and active during the school holidays so that they do not fall victims to negative influences.”
