Mario De Charmoy Lablache creates a surprise
- Christy Kilindo maintains dominance
Young Mario De Charmoy Lablache created a big surprise on Sunday at the Roche Caïman Omni-Sports Gymnasium by upsetting reigning number one player Godfrey Sultan to win the April Monthly Challenge tournament, while Christy Kilindo maintained her dominance in the women’s category.
In the men’s division one competition which attracted six players, De Charmoy Lablache was the most dominant player, collecting a maximum five wins to top the group which was contested on a league basis.
Mick Créa collected four victories to finish as the group’s runner-up, while Sultan could only manage three wins to finish third overall.
In the women’s division which was also played on a league format, four players were in action.
Christy Kilindo (formerly Bristol) collected three victories in as many matches to finish first, ahead of Laura Sinon who was the group’s runner-up with two victories.
With a single victory, Fatima Boniface finished third overall in the group.
In the boys’ division two competition, eight players registered and they were divided into two pools, with the first two in each group marching on to the cross knockout semifinals.
In the first semifinal, Chris Esparon beat Elick Rapide 3-0 to qualify for the final where met Ray Cecile who had beaten Jake Searles 3-0 in the other semi.
In the final, Cecile defeated Esparon 3-1 to go home with the April title. In the match for third place, Rapide beat Searles 3-1.
The boys’ division three competition attracted seven players who battled each other in a league, with three of them, namely Lukas Victor, Fabrice Leong-Kee and Kyle Simara ending up with five wins and a loss apiece.
The twist went further as both Victor and Leong-Kee were tied on sets win and sets against. They both accumulated 17 sets for and six against, forcing the group to be decided on the head-to-head rule.
Having beaten Leong-kee, Victor finished first, pushing the former into second place, while Simara was third overall in the group.
There was equally fierce competition in the boys’ division group which was also decided on the head-to-head rule after a tie between the top three players.
Six players registered in the group which was contested on a league format, with Juran Lablache, Loïc Mancienne and Stephan Adelaide registering four victories and one defeat apiece.
Boasting a superior set difference – 13 for and 4 against – Lablache was crowned the group winner, ahead of runner-up Mancienne (13 sets for and 8 against) and third-placed Adelaide (12 sets for and four against).
