Recurrent power outages on Praslin due to intermittent fault, says PUC

The Public Utilities Corporation has said the recent power supply interruptions on Praslin were primarily caused by an intermittent fault on the electricity network.

In a press release issued yesterday, the company explained that an intermittent fault is one that is not permanent and often temporarily clears itself during restoration efforts, making it extremely difficult to detect and locate in its early stages.

“Only after several reoccurrences does the fault develop into a more permanent one, at which point it becomes easier to locate and resolve through appropriate remedial measures. In this specific case, the fuse carrier of a 200 kVA pole-mounted transformerat Grand Ansewas identified as faulty and subsequently replaced,” explained the company.

The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) said it is deploying additional resources from Mahé to Praslin to carry out a comprehensive inspection on the electricity network. This includes conducting technical tests and assessments aimed at proactively identifying any infrastructure components that may be at risk of failure.

“In addition to this technical issue, a significant number of interruptions have been caused by trees or branches coming into contact with overhead power lines. Such incidents not only disrupt electricity supply but also pose serious safety risks,” it added, stating that to mitigate these risks, PUC’s protection systems are designed to automatically trip when such contact occurs. This protects both members of the public and PUC’s infrastructure, said the company.

“Unfortunately, while most consumers have been cooperative, a few residents continue to object to necessary tree-cutting operations. PUC would like to reiterate that the presence of trees within falling distance of power lines represents a serious hazard. Each power outage affects not only homes and businesses but also negatively impacts the experience of tourists, on whom the local economy heavily relies.”

To address these challenges, the company said it will soon be undertaking another major tree clearance activities across Praslin and is requesting the full support of all residents to ensure the success of this important preventive maintenance activity. PUC also reminded residents to avoid planting trees directly under or near overhead lines, as they may eventually grow into the lines or fall onto them during adverse weather conditions.

PUC said it remains committed to delivering a safe and reliable power supply to all residents of Praslin and has thanked them for their continued cooperation and understanding.
