Being one of the main sponsors of Team 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for the upcoming 10th Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) scheduled for Mauritius from July 19 to 28, the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) yesterday welcomed the Games’ torch which is presently on the pre-Games traditional relay.
The bank was the last stop on Mahé for the torch which will tour Praslin and La Digue today, before leaving the country for Mayotte tomorrow.
Managing director of MCB 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, Bernard Jackson, had the honour of carrying the torch inside the compound, after touring the Northern part of Mahé earlier during the day.
President of 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) Antonio Gopal, who is also the president of the Conseil International des Jeux (Cij), Socga’s secretary general Alain Alcindor and chief executive of the National Sports Council (NSC) Jean Larue, were there alongside the bank’s staff to welcome the torch.
Addressing those present, Mr Jackson reminded them that being an official sponsor of the IOIG for many years, the MCB will be present at any event on all the islands in relation to the Games and the torch relay is not an exception.
He also commended the effort of the athletes and coaches in their preparations for the event, as well as all those who in one way, or another have brought, or are still bringing their support towards the cause.
The torch relay on Mahé ended with some musical and cultural activities by various schools from the central region.
Meanwhile, an agreement was signed between the MCB and the NSC last week in line with the bank’s support for Team 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ at the 10th Games.
Team 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ will receive its full kit from the MCB and the agreement for the sponsorship worth R1.7 million was signed by Mr Jackson and Mr Larue in the presence of chairman of the NSC board Eddie Micock and the bank’s senior officials.
