US condemns “irresponsible and politically-motivated” actions of customs staff in Wednesday’s protests |27 September 2019
United 91㽶Ƶ has said it recognises the right of all workers to engage in peaceful and legal protest against what they may see as injustices in their workplace.
However, it strongly condemns “irresponsible and politically-motivated” actions on the part of partisans of political parties such as was seen on Wednesday at the Customs Division when some individuals were holding placards with the political slogan ‘Danny Out’.
“Such actions are not acceptable on government premises and by government officers in uniform,” says United 91㽶Ƶ in a communiqué.
“United 91㽶Ƶ believes that in seeking resolution to grievances, we must not lose sight of the need to uphold the status and the responsibilities of the posts we hold and of the importance of a stable economy. The attitude of ‘si lekonomi i ganny afekte i pa mon problenm’, expressed on national television last (Wednesday) night by a customs officer is not acceptable,” says the United 91㽶Ƶ communiqué.
United 91㽶Ƶ has called on the government and all concerned to take the necessary steps to resolve the grievances raised by the customs officers without delay and wishes to stress the importance of communication with workers at all times.
United 91㽶Ƶ has also called on government to continue revising schemes of service for various categories of workers to bring the necessary improvements to ensure fairness and just recompense for performance, good relations in the workplace and good services to the public.
“United 91㽶Ƶ reminds the population that the country needs an economy that works for every Seychellois and that it is in our best interest to work together and in solidarity for the well-being of our country. This is what the Party has fought for over 50 years and will continue to do in the future,” concludes the communiqué.
